When you get on an airplane to fly, you’ve likely never seen that pilot and you’ve never examined that airplane, but you’ll trust them to fly across oceans and land. That’s faith. You live by faith every day of your life, and you put your faith in normal people. “If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater.” Men can lie. The Holy Spirit is truth. The Holy Spirit witnesses to us. That’s the reason I’m never moved when a man says, “Well, I can’t believe.” He’s a liar. If you want to believe, the Holy Spirit will enable you to believe.

Suppose, Brother Bob and Brother Jim are arguing with me about apple pie. I have an apple pie, and I’ve just eaten a big slice of it. And Jim says, “I don’t believe there is any apple pie. It doesn’t even exist.” And Bob says, “Well, I believe it exists, but it’s no good.” Do you think those two guys are going to disturb me? See, I have the witness in myself. The Bible says, “Taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalm 34:8a). One way to find out whether apple pie is good or not is to taste and see. That’s our job; invite people to taste and see.

The assurance of your salvation is extremely important. We’re not talking about denominational preference. We’re not talking about little idiosyncrasies of doctrine. We’re not talking about political opinions. We’re not talking about matters that only count in this world. We’re talking about eternal life. We’re talking about your soul. When God made you, God breathed into your nostrils the breath of life, and you became a living soul. You could no more cease to exist than God Himself could cease to exist. Your soul will go on endless, timeless, dateless, and measureless—either in Heaven or in Hell. 

How important it is, therefore, that you absolutely know you’re saved.

Making It Real for His People

Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises. (Hebrews 8:6)

Christ is the Mediator of a new covenant, according to Hebrews 8:6. What does that mean? It means that his blood — the blood of the covenant (Luke 22:20; Hebrews 13:20) — finally and decisively purchased and secured the fulfillment of God’s promises for us.

It means that God, according to the new covenant promises, brings about our inner transformation by the Spirit of Christ.

And it means that God works this transformation in us through faith — faith in all that God is for us in Christ.

The new covenant is purchased by the blood of Christ, effected by the Spirit of Christ, and appropriated by faith in Christ.

The best place to see Christ working as the Mediator of the new covenant is in Hebrews 13:20–21:

Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

The words “working in us that which is pleasing in his sight” describe what happens when God writes the law on our hearts in accord with the new covenant. And the words “through Jesus Christ” describe Jesus as the Mediator of this glorious work of sovereign grace.

So, the meaning of Christmas is not only that God replaces shadows with Reality, but also that he takes the Reality and makes it real to his people. He writes it on our hearts. He does not lay his Christmas gift of salvation and transformation under the tree, so to speak, for you to pick up in your own strength. He picks it up and puts it in your heart and in your mind and gives you the seal of assurance that you are a child of God.

Does “Hope” Mean “Maybe”?

“For You are my hope, O Lord God; You are my trust from my youth.” Psalm 71:5

 

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT

What does the word “hope” mean in the Bible? It doesn’t mean “maybe.” We may use it that way in modern English, but that’s not what the word “hope” means when used in Scripture.

“Hope” means certainty, but not just any certainty. When the Bible says “hope,” it means a rock-ribbed assurance with anticipation, based on the Word of God.

When I was a little boy, my dad would take us out for a ride on Sunday afternoon. We kids would be in the back seat, getting into squabbles. If things got too heated, my dad would turn around and say, “When you boys get home, I’m going to whip you.” With my dad, I knew this was a rock-ribbed truth! We could anticipate it, but not with gladness!

Our hope, however, our rock-ribbed assurance, comes with glad anticipation!

Share the hope of eternal life in Jesus Christ with someone today. Maybe there’s someone at the hospital who needs you to speak words of hope. Maybe it’s a member of your family!

Just as You Are

BIBLE MEDITATION

“To the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.” Ephesians 1:6

 

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT

Do you have a “know-so” salvation? What I mean is, do you know that you are saved and have the assurance that if you died tonight, you’d spend eternity with the Lord in Heaven?

Many folks don’t have that assurance, and in some cases, it is not a spiritual problem. It is a psychological problem. They cannot accept the fact that God has accepted them.

Charlotte Elliott penned these words to a timeless hymn of assurance:

“Just as I am, without one plea, 

But that Thy blood was shed for me, 

And that Thou bid’st me come to Thee, 

O Lamb of God, I come, I come!”

You are accepted just as you are. It is all grace.

ACTION POINT

Find the hymn “Just As I Am” and sing it to the Lord. Make it your song throughout the day when Satan tries to make you doubt God’s love and eternal gift of salvation.
