“According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward.”
1 CORINTHIANS 3:10-14
PONDER THIS
I am a “has-been” athlete, but I did play some football. I was the captain of a championship team, and our award was a little gold football. We also got a letterman jacket, which was just a sweater with a letter on it. Our letters were PB, for Palm Beach High School. Over time I added some more trophies to my collection, but one day, thieves came into our house and took the golden football. And moths got to the sweater. I have no idea where my other trophies are. These things fade so quickly. But when you win souls for Jesus Christ, you don’t receive a corruptible crown: you receive a crown of glory that will never fade away.
If you are a Sunday morning benchwarmer, listen to this: “each one’s work will become clear” (v. 13). One of these days, the way you lived will be made clear, “for the Day will declare it” (v. 13). God is looking for quality, not quantity. He is looking for your heart of surrender, for your trust in Him that changes how you look at others and affects the hope you share with them. When you share that hope, when you surrender, you have hope that is eternal. When you invest in things that will perish, always keeping control of your life, you will only be filled with regret.
According to Scripture, what is an eternal investment? What is a temporary investment?
What are the things you invest your time, money, and resources into? Are they eternal or temporary?
Practice This
Make an eternal investment today.
