PONDER THIS

When I was a little boy, I liked to go to the movies on Saturday afternoons, and we would see Tarzan. Tarzan was the hero of every little boy when I was growing up. But there was one time that I was always concerned for Tarzan. Tarzan would be swimming in the river, but over on the shore would be a crocodile. The crocodile would blink his eyes a couple of times and then slide into the water. Tarzan would be swimming along and not know that crocodile was there, and I would be so frightened because I can’t think of anything worse than to be swimming with a crocodile. Somehow Tarzan would always out-swim the crocodile, but what happened in that movie is an illustration of what Jude wrote to warn the Church about. Jude gave a warning that there are certain people who have crept into the Church. (See verse 4.) He described somebody who could slip into the water without even making a ripple. This is very dangerous and sinister. So, Jude wrote this book to sound an alarm.

When Wonders Lead You the Wrong Way

“But there was a certain man called Simon, who previously practiced sorcery in the city and astonished the people of Samaria, claiming that he was someone great, to whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, ‘This man is the great power of God.’” ACTS 8:9-10

 

PONDER THIS

Don’t be deceived or dazzled by the power of false religion. It is real. Pharaoh’s magicians performed miracles when Moses performed miracles of God. As we think about counterfeit Christianity, it is important that we not be dazzled by it. If some magician, some soothsayer, some astrologer, some necromancer, or fortune-teller comes and does things that you cannot understand, don’t go trailing after him because you say, “Well, I know it’s real!” That is the point. It is real. That doesn’t mean to follow it; it means to flee from it. Just because there is a sign or a wonder, does not mean the thing is from God. We should always come back to the Scripture to see what it says about such signs and about how God reveals Himself. The things of God always point back to God.

Don’t Rely on a Counterfeit Christianity

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.”

2 TIMOTHY 4:3-5

 

PONDER THIS

If God loved us enough to give Jesus, what will He withhold? Don’t get caught up in a counterfeit Christianity. God is unsparing: He will not spare sin; He will not spare the sinner. But neither has He spared His Son, the Lord Jesus, so that you and I might be saved and have eternal life. The world is full of counterfeits. Make sure you have the real thing.

What if I told you, “Counterfeit dollar bills exist, so you should get rid of all of your money”? You would say, “Pastor, that’s stupid.” And you’re right! In the same way, there are counterfeit Christians, but don’t you let that keep you away from the Lord Jesus Christ. The counterfeit only proves the worth and validity of the real. They make the counterfeit because the original is valuable! Don’t let a counterfeit keep you out of Heaven. Jesus is real. Salvation is real. And you can be real if you’ll repent of your sin and trust Him. The world is full of counterfeits; make sure you have the real thing.

The Captain of Camouflage

“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.”

MATTHEW 7:15-17

 

PONDER THIS

Satan is the captain of camouflage. He is the master of deceit. Again and again, the Bible warns us of false prophets.

Some say the Bible is not true, the Bible is a bundle of blunders, or the Bible is a book of lies. But even in their attempts to dismiss the Bible, they do not point out falsehood—they authenticate the Bible. If there were no false prophets, the Bible would not be true. The Bible says they’re coming and to beware. These things confirm and authenticate our faith.

There are many today trudging to churches, but they do not hear salvation by Jesus’ blood preached. But many will not call those who neglect this teaching false prophets. I don’t care how great of a speaker he is. I don’t care how many good works he does in the neighborhood. If the Gospel of Jesus is not the center of all things, it is false teaching. People can be fooled by a nice building, but God knows the sincere places of worship, the places that seek Him over a name for themselves or the desires of their hearts.

Can You Spot a False Teacher?

“If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness, he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions, useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself.”

1 Timothy 6:3-5

 

PONDER THIS

A young man finished his core curriculum in college, and he wanted to coast a little bit so he could get his diploma and get out of there. So, he started to wonder, “What is a course where I wouldn’t have to do any homework and could just coast through?” His friend recommended bird watching. He said, the professor is old and doesn’t expect much of the students so all you have to do is walk around with binoculars. So, he signed up for the course his friend recommended, but there was a new young professor just out of graduate school who took ornithology very seriously. They studied through each part of the bird and took note of what made various birds distinct so they could spot them well. What he thought would be easy required more than he thought.

We need a course in bird watching. We need to be able to spot and identify the false teachers, the dirty birds of our day. They’re not easily spotted because the devil is a master of deception and a master of camouflage. Our Lord said, “Beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly they are ravenous wolves” (Matthew 7:15). We need to grow in our discernment of false teachers. They may use the Bible and frequently do. They may have Sunday school, church services, radio programs, revival services, Bible conferences, magazines, books, tracts, miracle-working power, mission societies, and youth activities. Counterfeits often look like the genuine thing.

False Prophets for Profit

PRAY OVER THIS

“They have forsaken the right way and gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness.” 2 Peter 2:15

 

PONDER THIS

False prophets never get enough. They are greedy. We all make mistakes. I’ve made plenty of them, and I’ll make plenty more, but false prophets are people who have rotten characters. They are not merely mistaken. They are willfully wicked, and every one of them once knew the truth. Peter said in this passage, “They have forsaken the right way.” It’s not that they’ve never known. It is that they have willfully, deliberately forsaken the right way. Peter went on to say in 2 Peter 2:21, “For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them.” They know what’s right, and they refuse it. They willfully prostitute the Gospel of Jesus Christ for gain.

When is it important to spend personal time in the Word to discern God’s truth?

Are You Easily Deceived by Enticing Words?

PRAY OVER THIS

“By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber.”

2 Peter 2:3

 

PONDER THIS

What is the predominant thing about most ads? Joy, fun, beauty, and youth. The advertisement is appealing because the product is presented alongside something else so that by association, you think the product is good and will bring you those things. The devil is very clever—he deceives people exactly the same way in the realm of religion as he does with deception in other areas of life. This verse says he uses deceptive words. In Greek, that word is plastos. It’s the word we get plastic from. False prophets use plastic words. Now what is plastic? Plastic is something you can mold to fit almost any situation. It is also something that can be made to look like the real thing. You can have plastic leather that looks like real leather. It looks valuable but over time you can clearly see it is not the real thing. That’s the kind of deceptive words these people used. They are words that sound appealing but are not the truth of God. They are words that sound enticing but will ultimately lead you to destruction. The lies of the enemy are disguised with plastic words. Oh, how we need to know the Word of God to combat these wicked schemes!

Partial Truths and Half Gospels

PRAY OVER THIS

“But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.” 2 Peter 2:1

 

PONDER THIS

Look at the word secretly. In this case, the word has the idea of laying something alongside something else. Laying something good alongside something that is bad. Very few false teachers and false prophets will directly deny the whole scope of Christianity. In fact, some of them will affirm what you and I believe. They might say, “Yes, we believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” Or they may say, “Yes, we believe that the Bible is the Word of God.” Or they might say “Yes, we ought to live good, godly, Christ-filled lives and so forth.”

But then they will secretly lay their false doctrine alongside that. The devil is very clever. The Bible says he’s “more cunning than any beast of the field” (Genesis 3:1). We are called to be on guard so that we won’t be deceived by partial truths and half gospels.

Are You Tempted to Lie?

PRAY OVER THIS

“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” Exodus 20:16

 

PONDER THIS

When I was younger, I was driving down to my little country church with one headlight, hoping I could make it back to school and get it fixed. The highway patrolman stopped me and said, “Son, do you know you only have one headlight.” I responded, “I only have one headlight?” On one hand, you could say I told him the absolute truth. I only had one headlight. But the way I said it insinuated that I didn’t know that. When I got back in the car, the Holy Spirit tore me up and convicted me about my lie.

We can lie with the tone of our voice, and we also lie when we slander others. The Bible says in James 4:11, “Do not speak evil of one another, brethren.” It doesn’t say whether or not it’s true. We are not to slander. We’re not to speak with an evil spirit. A.B. Simpson, the great Christian and Missionary Alliance pastor, once said, “I would rather play with forked lightning, or take in my hands living wires with their fiery current, than speak a reckless word against any servant of Christ, or idly repeat the slanderous darts which thousands of Christians are hurling on others, to the hurt of their own souls and bodies.” When you listen to slander, you’re as guilty as the person who spreads it.

Apostates Ridicule the Truth

PRAY OVER THIS

“Likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak evil of dignitaries.” Jude 1:8

 

PONDER THIS

The word “dignitaries” is the word we get doxology from. It literally means “glories, glorious things, and majesties.” Jude was saying there is nothing too glorious or too holy that the apostate will not ridicule. Apostates receive the truth, refuse the truth, or repudiate the truth, and then they ridicule the truth. They have a way of speaking evil of glorious things. Most likely, Jude was writing about people there who were ridiculing and blaspheming the doctrine of the angels. (See Jude 1:9.) But you’ll find this about the apostates, they have quick lips. They know how to ridicule holy things and are not ashamed to do so. There’s nothing too sacred or too holy for them to revile and ridicule. And they don’t do so from outside the church, they do it from inside the church.

Why is it important that we have reverence for the holy things of God?

What Does It Mean to Be Ungodly?

PRAY OVER THIS

“For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ.” Jude 1:4

 

PONDER THIS

Jude called those who had crept into the church ungodly. What does the word ungodly mean? It does not mean they did not mention God or even talk about Him. As a matter of fact, they spoke about God quite freely. He meant a person without reverential awe of God. The basic ingredient missing in the life of an apostate is a fear of God. They talked flippantly and carelessly and blasphemously about holy things. In verse 8, we see the same idea, “Likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak evil of dignitaries.” Their mouths and their tongues ran up and down through the land. There was no fear of God before their eyes, and they feared not to mock and speak of holy things. They took things upon their lips that ought to make us tremble. They lacked reverence.

READ THIS

In the Bible, there is no greater crime than being a false prophet. It’s bad to tell a lie, and it’s worse to teach a lie; but it is evil to teach a lie about God. Don’t let false teachers take you by surprise; when you look for the devil, never fail to look in the pulpit. We must learn how to spot a counterfeit teacher.

Scripture tells us that false teachers are among us and warns us of the dangers of their doctrine.

We can identify counterfeits by their message. There are five tests we should run in our minds as we listen to a preacher:

Source Test: What is the basis of his teaching?

Savior Test: Does he believe that Jesus Christ is the Messiah?

Subject Test: Is the primary source of his teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ?

Salvation Test: Does he teach salvation by grace, or does he try to mix works or baptism or anything else into salvation?

Sanctification Test: Does he teach, and endeavor to live, a holy life?

CONSIDER THIS

Which of the five tests for identifying a counterfeit by his message stood out to you?

How might you work to remember these measures and actively use them when listening to a new teacher?

Use a concordance this week to look up what the Bible says about each of these tests so that you might better prepare yourself to identify false teaching.

Are you worried about what other people think about you?

BIBLE MEDITATION:

“Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.” 1 Peter 3:16

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:

When the Bible tells us, “Commit your way” to the Lord, what does that mean—my “way”? It means your well-traveled path,  your lifestyle, your way of living, your reputation, the way you do things, what people think about you, how people perceive you.  Just give that to the Lord.

We’re worried about what people think about us.  Just let someone say something bad about some folks—criticize their lifestyle, the way they do things—and they get all upset about it. And none of us likes to be criticized.

Have you ever been criticized? Maybe blamed for something you didn’t do? Or been unjustly slandered? You are not alone. Jesus was the whipping boy of His day. He endured relentless criticism and slander. Was He worried? No.

ACTION POINT:

You too must not worry when others speak falsely. Just give that to the Lord. Author/Pastor Peter Lord told me one day, “When anybody says anything bad about me, I just say, ‘Thank God they don’t know any more.’” Jesus would tell us, “When they criticize you, just roll that over onto Me. I understand and I am in charge. You just trust in Me.”

Calling Good Evil and Evil Good

BIBLE MEDITATION:

 “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!” Isaiah 5:20

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:

People can become so warped in their thinking that they don’t know the difference between right and wrong. 

I was listening to the radio one morning, and they were talking about what scientists want to do with the tissue of aborted babies. They said that some women are thinking about having babies, aborting them, then selling the tissue for research. The scientific community is promoting this propaganda because of the good they say the research will have on the whole of humanity! But what about the whole of humanity that begins in the womb? 

People today will play enough tricks on their minds that they will literally approve evil with a good conscience.

Where do you stand on this issue? What is right and what is wrong?

ACTION POINT:

Take some time this morning to read Psalm 139 and ask God to show you His truth.

Ps.139:
1 O LORD, you have searched me and known me! 
2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. 
3 You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. 
4 Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether.

A Very Scary Thing!!

Eph.4:14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.
There is nothing more scary to me than the Word of the living God being twisted to suit man! Man had better except what God commands or he will surely suffer the consequences. I have read that there are some who have taken God's Word and twisted it to say that in the end, all people will be saved, even the ones who deny Christ. These people have went so far as to say that there is no hell and that God would not send people there if there was such a place. I know that God's Word has power because it tells of the hope we have found in Christ and that is why I am heartsick over so called Christians twisting it. We are to proclaim the Word boldly!
1Cor.1:17 For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.
1Cor.1:18 For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
Heb. 13:9 Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited those devoted to them.
Romans 16:17-20 I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive. For your obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, but I want you to be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil. The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. We are all sinners and equal at the foot of the cross but to us, those of us who repent, we have been forgiven by the washing of Jesus' blood who cleanses from within. We are a new creation and no longer depend on ourselves but the power of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 1:8  But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”Romans 6:14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.
Romans 8:31-39 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
So I will tell you this, when your hear someone teach the Word always look in your bible. Always check it out and ask God to reveal Himself to you! You need to be in the Word everyday! It is our comfort, our shield, our help in troubled times and what we have been commanded to live, learn and teach to the nations!
Holy Father, forgive us when we fail You. Teach us how to be like You, to live like You and to share the Word like You. Change our hearts everyday, and have mercy on us. Amen

Scoffers and False Gospel

Jude 1 17-23 But you must remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ.  They said to you, "In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions."  It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit. But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit,  keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.  And have mercy on those who doubt;  save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh. Lord, I see this today in our society. People are being led away by others who have forgotten Your word or never knew it. Help us Lord to take a stand for what is right in Your eyes. Your word is a guide for us to live godly lives, let not Your word be perverted. Lord, have mercy on us. Amen 2 Cor.11:3-4 But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough.There is no other gospel!!! Gal.1:6-10  I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel-- not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed. For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.
