Two Legs, the King’s Highway, and a Hard Run

PONDER THIS

Sexual immorality is not a sin we are told to fight; it’s a sin that we are told to flee. Second Timothy 2:22 says to “flee . . . youthful lusts.” Don’t linger and don’t try to figure it out on your own. Don’t even come near the house. The way to escape is two legs, the King’s highway, and a hard run. Get out of there. Don’t even hang around the edge of this temptation.

Joseph was a holy man and had become a servant in Potiphar’s house (Genesis 39). Mrs. Potiphar tried to entice Joseph to come to bed with her. Realizing what was happening, Joseph began to leave the room. She reached out and took hold of his garment and so he left his coat and fled. Some of us would have hung around, even if we knew it was wrong. Joseph didn’t do that. Joseph did not try to stay and fight this temptation; he fled. Whether it is a situation you encounter, a sin you are struggling with, or a thought that crosses your mind, the response should be the same: flee!

When are the times it is not wise to even try to fight sin but instead to flee it altogether? Why do you need to know the difference?

How can you seek wisdom about the times it is appropriate to fight and the times it is appropriate to flee?

Are You Cozy with a Friendly Enemy?

PONDER THIS

The word cosmos means, “a system or an order of things.” It is a way of doing things. For example, we talk about the “world” of finance, sports, or fashion. That’s the way the word world is being used here. The Bible says: “Do not love the world,” or cosmos. There is a system that we are not to love. John was not talking about planet Earth; he was not talking about the people, either. He was talking about an ungodly system set against our Lord and His Christ. You’re not to love that world. Although it may act very friendly toward you or cozy up to you, it is a friendly enemy.

It is important to see what the Bible has to say and understand why we’re not to love the ungodly world system. When we feel tempted to join the worldly system, we need to think about where it is headed and the consequences of following and loving the world.

How to Defy Sinful Desire

By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward. (Hebrews 11:24–26)

Or, boil it down to the essentials: “By faith Moses . . . [left] the fleeting pleasures of sin . . . for he was looking to the reward” (Hebrews 11:24–26).

Faith is not content with “fleeting pleasures.” It is ravenous for joy. Joy that lasts. Forever. And the word of God says, “In your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore” (Psalm 16:11). So, faith will not be sidetracked into the deceitful pleasures of sin. It will not give up so easily in its quest for maximum joy.

The role of God’s word is to feed faith’s appetite for God. And, in doing this, it weans my heart off of the deceptive taste of lust.

At first, lust begins to trick me into feeling that I would really miss out on some great satisfaction if I followed the path of purity. But then I take up the sword of the Spirit and begin to fight.

I read that it is better to gouge out my eye than to lust (Matthew 5:29).

I read that if I think about things that are pure and lovely and excellent, the peace of God will be with me (Philippians 4:8–9).

I read that setting the mind on the flesh brings death, but setting the mind on the Spirit brings life and peace (Romans 8:6).

I read that lust wages war against my soul (1 Peter 2:11), and that the pleasures of this life choke out the life of the Spirit (Luke 8:14).

But best of all, I read that God withholds no good thing from those who walk uprightly (Psalm 84:11), and that the pure in heart will see God (Matthew 5:8).

As I pray for my faith to be satisfied with God’s life and peace, the sword of the Spirit carves the sugarcoating off the poison of lust. I see it for what it is. And by the grace of God, its alluring power is broken.

Lust definition 

Very strong sexual desire for another

The Consequences of Lust

Satan is attacking our families!

Satan is attacking our marriages!

He is convincing men and women that they are not happy in their marriage.

He is playing on the emotions of "I don't want this life anymore" or "I feel trapped". 

There are endless selfish reasons that you can come up with but let me be clear it boils down to sin.

Men and women are so wrapped up in self that they can't see the lies that Satan has planted in their hearts.

They do not heed the warnings that are rooted deeply in their spirits about how destructive sexual sin is.

People think that divorce is fine. 

The kids will rebound.

The parents will move on.

Not true, divorce has a lasting detrimental effect on kids.

It gives them a sense of loss that can never be fixed. 

It ruins women's self esteem even though they were never the problem.

The problem was a self absorbed man who never grew up.

It wrecks men's hearts because they know they gave everything they had to a selfish vain woman who could never be pleased.

There is no difference between a Jezebel and a prostitute.

They are both deceitful, cunning as a snake and lead men down the path to destruction.

As for men who dive into sexual sin, grow up, learn to commit your life to God and His plan for a monogamous lifelong marriage.

It is possible!

There will be times where you will not like each other and that is ok.

You pray about it asking God to correct your selfishness and He will.

And make no mistake, it is selfishness.

Divorce came about because of the hardness of man's heart.

Men and women, will you repent?

Prostitutes and adulteress:

27 For a prostitute is a deep pit; an adulteress is a narrow well. 

28 She lies in wait like a robber and increases the traitors among mankind.  - Proverbs 23:27-28

Sexual Sin Defiles the Body

12 "All things are lawful for me," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful for me," but I will not be dominated by anything.

13 "Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food"-and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.

14 And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power.

15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never!

16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, "The two will become one flesh."

17 But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him.

18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.

19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,

20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. - 1 Corinthians 6:12-20

Sexual Sin Defiles the Church

1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father's wife.

2 And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you.

3 For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing.

4 When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus,

5 you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.

6 Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?

7 Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.

8 Let us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

9 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people-

10 not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world.

11 But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler-not even to eat with such a one.

12 For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge?

13 God judges those outside. "Purge the evil person from among you." - 1 Corinthians 5

Hard Hearts:

2 And large crowds followed him, and he healed them there.

3 And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?"

4 He answered, "Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female,

5 and said, 'Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'?

6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate."

7 They said to him, "Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?"

8 He said to them, "Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.

9 And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery." - Matthew 19:2-9

Repent:

The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. - 2 Peter 3:9
