Ignorance Guarantees Ungodliness

His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence. (2 Peter 1:3)

I am amazed at the power that the Bible attributes to knowledge.

Listen again to 2 Peter 1:3: “[God’s] divine power has granted . . . all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence.”

Literally, all the power available from God to live and be godly comes through knowledge! Amazing! What a premium we should put on doctrine and instruction in the Scriptures! Life and godliness are at stake.

Not that knowing guarantees godliness. It doesn’t. But it seems that ignorance guarantees ungodliness. Because, Peter says, the divine power that leads to godliness is given through the knowledge of God.

Here are three implications, a warning, and an exhortation.

1. Read! Read! Read! But beware of wasting your time on theological foam and suds. Read rich doctrinal books about “the one who called you to his glory and excellence.”

2. Ponder! Ponder! Slow down. Take time to think about what the Bible means when you read it. Ask questions. Keep a journal. Let yourself be humbly troubled by puzzling things. The deepest insights come from trying to see the unifying root of two apparently antagonistic branches on the tree of truth.

3. Discuss. Discuss. Be a part of a small group that cares passionately about the truth. Not a group that just likes to talk and raise problems. But a group that believes there are biblical answers to biblical problems, and they can be found.

Warning: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6).“They have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge” (Romans 10:2). So beware of the deadly effects of ignorance.

Exhortation: “Let us know; let us press on to know the Lord” (Hosea 6:3).

Sin’s Grip, God’s Cure

“My son, pay attention to my wisdom; lend your ear to my understanding, that you may preserve discretion, and your lips may keep knowledge. For the lips of an immoral woman drip honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil; but in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword.” PROVERBS 5:1-4

 

PONDER THIS

Nothing will protect you more from immorality than loading up with the Word of God. You need the Word of God in your heart. Every now and then, we hear about some minister or another prominent figure who fell to immorality, and we think, “Oh, isn’t that terrible? Look how far he fell.” You may not know how low he was living, but he didn't fall that far. He failed to keep himself in the Word of God and store it up inside.

Sin is so deceptive and has deadly power. Sin fascinates and then it assassinates. It thrills and then it kills. It brings death—spiritual death, physical death, eternal death. We cannot combat it on our own. We need God to change our hearts daily by the Spirit and through His Word. When sin grasps us, it will not let go. Only God can heal our hearts; let’s start our day with Him.

Seeking Truth Feeds Your Spirit

“Buy the truth, and do not sell it, also wisdom and instruction and understanding.” PROVERBS 23:23

 

PONDER THIS

Truth is to your spirit what food is to your body. Truth is to your spirit what light is to your eyes. Truth is to your spirit what melody is to your ears. When you read, don’t read merely to get facts; read to get truth. You’ve only got one life. Do you want to live and die without learning the truth? To know truth is to know God. All truth is God’s truth. The devil doesn’t have any truth; he is the source of deception.

You say, “Then, Pastor, I’m just going to read the Bible and nothing else.” No, that’d be a mistake. You need to read widely. The Apostle Paul did. He was a literate man. He quoted the Greek poets and philosophers. He was familiar with all that went on because Paul knew that all truth intersects.

When you learn, when you read, you don’t read just to be a gatherer of facts. You learn to be a channel of truth. If you read and you grow in knowledge, but you don’t grow in grace, you’re going to make yourself obnoxious. You just become one of those people who parades his or her knowledge. Don’t read so you can split a theological hair into nine different sections but read so that you can be a whole person. Read for enlightenment because to know truth is to know God.

Who is Influencing You?

On a reality TV show, a man stepped on an elevator and noticed everybody was facing the back wall; nobody was facing the door even though there was no opening in the back wall. The man got on the elevator, looked around, surveyed the situation, and began to face the back wall as the elevator went up and down.

This shows the power of peer pressure, public opinion, and our desire to conform to what other people are doing. What do we do about this? We guard our company. Let your home be the happiest place on Earth. Let your children know you love them and that you love their friends, but at the same time, you are watching the company they keep. What we expect of our children should be a reality in our lives too. May we guard our company and be aware of those who may influence us more than we realize.

Do You Really Know God?

PONDER THIS

Do you know God, or do you know about God? If you only know about God, you study and learn facts about God, but that is not enough. The way to have a life where you will not fall is to have an intimate, personal knowledge of God.

For years, I used to carry a card in my wallet about my wife. It told all the vital statistics. It told about her size, her shoe size, her height, and various other things. You know it is extremely hard to buy a dress for a woman if you don’t know the size she wears. On that card, I even noted her birthday, anniversaries, and other special occasions so I would remember them. This card told me information about my wife. Imagine you have never met Joyce and you said, “Tell me about your wife.” So, I pulled out that card and handed it to you. You would know about her, but you would not know her. You can sit in a church and get all the facts about God. That is knowledge. But we need an intimate relationship with the Lord.

Truer Knowledge Brings Greater Joy

And all the people went their way . . . to make great rejoicing, because they had understood the words that were declared to them. (Nehemiah 8:12)

The only joy that reflects the worth of God and overflows in God-glorifying love is rooted in the true knowledge of God. And to the degree that our knowledge is small or flawed, our joy will be a poor echo of God’s true excellence.

The experience of Israel in Nehemiah 8:12 is a paradigm of how God-glorifying joy happens in the heart. Ezra had read the word of God to them and the Levites had explained it. And then the people went away “to make great rejoicing.”

Their great rejoicing was because they had understood words — the true words of God.

Most of us have tasted this experience of the heart burning with joy when the word of God was opened to us (Luke 24:32). Twice Jesus said that he taught his disciples for the sake of their joy.

John 15:11, “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.”

John 17:13, “These things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.”

And what we mainly see in the word is the Lord himself — God himself — offering himself to be known and enjoyed. “The Lord revealed himself to Samuel at Shiloh by the word of the Lord” (1 Samuel 3:21).

The point is that if our joy is going to reflect the glory of God, then it must flow from true knowledge of how God is glorious. If we are going to enjoy God duly, we must know him truly.

Are You Growing in Knowledge and Truth?

Would you like to find out whether or not you’re growing in knowledge and truth? Let me ask you this question: Are you excited about truth? What new truths are you learning? Are you experiencing freedom in your life? Jesus said, “You shall know the truth, and the truth will make you free” (John 8:32). Are you still in bondage to political correctness, prejudice, lies, the party line, pressures, and fears? It is because you’ve not understood the truth. Are you learning humility? A man who is learning truth doesn’t tell you how much he knows; he tells you how little he knows and how much he has yet to learn. The more you learn, the more you realize that the ocean is so big, and your boat is so small. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies.

Have you experienced the reality that knowledge puffs up?

Some Have No Knowledge of God

Most have knowledge of God, but not all.

Even to those who don't know God as His followers know Him, God has given them His essence in nature.

They are aware there is a higher being that created what they see.

This brings us to the command Christ has given believers, go make disciples.

That command ties into the lack of unbelievers knowledge of God.

You can follow His command to share Christ wherever you go.

Strike up a conversation about what you see when you look into the sky.

How did the sun get there?

How is the earth held in the universe without something holding it?

What about the air we breathe?

What about your heart beat?

Your very own breath, and where it comes from.

The purpose of these conversations are to make the lost souls wonder!

Plant the seeds of Who God is.

God will do the soul touching through the Holy Spirit.

There will be the conviction-the need of a Savior, repentance, restoration, realization that Christ alone justifies, forgiveness and discipleship. 

Romans 1:18-20

[18] For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. [19] For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. Would You Qualify as a Godly Leader?

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT

Which is more important for a leader—to be smart or be wise? How much better to have someone at the helm who is wise rather than just smart! When God offered Solomon anything he wanted, Solomon knew enough to ask for wisdom. Wisdom is the gift of God. I pray God will give us wise leaders.

What about in your church? Are those in leadership wise? Do you sense they are trusting in the Lord for every decision, devoted to prayer and study of His Word?

Many leaders today are not statesmen. This is true both in the nation and in the church of God. There are politicians making decisions by polls: “If I find out what people want and give it to them, they’ll vote for me.” They lead by what I call “the chapped finger”—find out which way the wind is blowing, then go that way. They’re leading not by godly wisdom but by human opinion.

Former President Harry Truman, commenting on polls versus leadership, said, “I wonder how far Moses would have gone if he’d taken a poll in Egypt?”

What would Jesus Christ have preached, had he taken a poll in Israel? Would the Reformation have happened if Martin Luther had taken a poll? What’s more important, polls of public opinion at the moment or right and wrong and leadership?

ACTION POINT

People with fortitude and honesty, guided by what is right, make history. What about you? You can’t have wisdom from God unless you are under God in service and worship. If you are jockeying for leadership, stop it. Instead, devote yourself to prayer and the study of the Word. Wisdom will be the result.

Knowledge of the Truth

14 if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

What I'm seeing today in this world are people of so called renown speaking bold faced lies! What is more disturbing than the lies is the fact they are fully aware they are misleading people. They have no shame! They open their mouths and spew unfounded hatred against everything that is right and good. Please people wake up! They are trying to send you down a road of slavery! They are for self, want to control your every thought, movement, and generally stifle free speech. God has given us a mind for discernment, wisdom to savor words and follow hidden meaning. We must pray for knowledge, asking Almighty God to give us clear and precise wisdom. Our very existence in a free society is at risk. Fall before the Lord, ask for mercy, wisdom, discernment and forgiveness for our land and the sin that has taken over.

Sin is not a mistake!

Sin is not an illness! 

It is a rebellion against God.

The cure is the blood of Christ covering it.

God's only acceptable payment is faith in Christ and His ability to give salvation.

Yes even though you will sometimes fail, repent! Keep your unshakable soul filled with the reasoning that it's Christ alone!

Study the Word!!

The Kind of Cold That Kills

He sends out his command to the earth; his word runs swiftly. (Psalm 147:15)

Tonight it will be forty degrees warmer in our kitchen freezer than it is outside here in Minneapolis. The high temperature tomorrow will be five degrees below zero (Fahrenheit). We receive this from the Lord’s hand.

He sends out his command to the earth;

his word runs swiftly.

He gives snow like wool;

he scatters frost like ashes.

He hurls down his crystals of ice like crumbs;

who can stand before his cold?

He sends out his word, and melts them;

he makes his wind blow and the waters flow.

(Psalm 147:15–18)

This is the kind of cold you do not play with. It kills.

When I came to Minnesota from South Carolina, I dressed for it. But I did not prepare life-saving support in my car in case of a breakdown.

One Sunday night on the way home from church, in this kind of cold, my car died. This was before cell phones. I had a wife and two small children in the car.

There was no one on this road. I suddenly realized, this is dangerous.

Soon it was very dangerous. No one came.

I saw in the distance through a fence a house. I am the father. This is my job. I climbed the fence and ran to the house and knocked on the door. They were home. I explained that I had a wife and two small children in the car, and asked if they would let us in. They did.

This is a kind of cold you do not play with.

It is one more way God says, “Whether hot or cold, high or deep, sharp or blunt, loud or quiet, bright or dark . . . don’t toy with me. I am God. I made all these things. They speak of me, just like the warm summer breezes do, and the gentle rains, and the soft moonlit nights, and the lapping of the lakeside, and lilies of the field and the birds of the air.”

There is a word for us in this cold. May the Lord give us skin to feel and ears to hear.

When you vote today, follow 5 principles….

Therefore, to Him that knoweth to do good and doeth it not, to him it is sin. James 4:17

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:

Today in the US is an important election day. I trust God every one of you will vote. Dr. Francis Schaeffer, a brilliant mind and one of the foremost Christian thinkers of our time, gave us 5 principles to keep in mind when we vote. These principles have nothing to do with personalities or political parties. They are principles. 

1. The dignity of human life. 

2. The importance of the traditional family. 

3. Religious freedom of speech in schools, both public and private.

4. Human rights and the need for justice in our world. 

5. The compassionate use of accumulated wealth.

These five principles ought to be in the heart and mind of every child of God. Pray over these; then based on God’s Word, make your determination. God will give you wisdom in this matter.

ACTION POINT:

Pray it from your heart, “God, bless America, and God, give us space to repent. And may the ones of Your choosing be elected to lead us.” Remember, “to him that knoweth to do good and doeth it not, to him it is sin.”

A Knowledge of the Truth

Jesus came.

God the Father gave Him a mission.

My people are far from Me.

They have turned away from Me.

They are deep in sin.

I am the only true living God.

I want them searching, thirsty and hungry for Me.

They are rebels, stiff necked and disobedient.

You alone My Son will satisfy My wrath towards them.

Christ obedience gives life to those who were perishing.

There is one way that will deliver them from an eternity in Hell. 

Bring them the truth.

If not for You My Son, they will forever be separated from Me.

Those who believe You alone are able to offer salvation will become Your apostles.

They study My words of life.

They share My words of life.

By Your shed blood, they snatch souls out of the fire.
