Not the Book of the Month

“And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.”

REVELATION 22:12-13

PONDER THIS

The Bible is like a garment. You can pull a thread and it wrinkles in a completely different area. I have been studying the Bible seriously now for more than forty years. I'm not finding hidden flaws; I'm finding hidden beauties. I'm finding things that are confirming my faith more in the Word of God. How do you explain the fact that the Bible is unified? There is no other book that has come together with such unity as the Bible, yet it was written by dozens of authors over a period of hundreds of years.

The Bible has one theme: Salvation. The Bible has one hero, Jesus. There is one villain, Satan. There is one purpose: God’s Glory. Jesus said the Scriptures cannot be broken. The Bible is not the book of the month; it is the book of the ages. No book has ever had as much opposition as the Bible. Men have laughed at it, scorned it, ridiculed it, made laws against it, and burned it. There was a time in Scottish history when owning a Bible was a crime worthy of death. Many a time a man has preached a funeral for the Bible. But the corpse has outlived the pallbearers. People die. The Bible survives and it is applicable and up to date for today and every day.

What are some ways you have seen that the Bible is relevant to your life?

What are some areas in which you find it hard to apply God’s Word?

PRACTICE THIS

Spend time reading Scripture. Ask God to use it in your life today.

Does Your Bible Speak to You?

PRAY OVER THIS

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

(Hebrews 4:12)

READ THIS

The Bible is not like any other book: it breathes, sings, and weeps; it is alive in the power that it possesses. Whether penned by the Apostles, spoken by the mouth of Jesus, or recorded on scrolls by the Old Testament prophets, God calls these inspired utterances the Word of God. The Word of God is absolute perfection; though the Scriptures were written by men, the words were inspired by God and declared completely infallible.

The Bible also speaks of God’s wonderful character. Jesus is called the Word of God in John 1:1-3; this comparison links together the character of Jesus and the character of the Bible.

Both Jesus Christ in His humanity and the Bible have come from God. They both live for eternity, absolutely unchanging lights for dark places. They bear elements of humanity and are given authority by God.

CONSIDER THIS

How have you experienced the reality that the Bible is not like any other book? How has this affected your daily life?

Jesus (in His humanity) and the Bible have come from God and exhibit His perfect and unchanging character. How does this inspire your faith in both Jesus and the Bible?

DO THIS

The fact that the Bible is the living Word of God should change the way we view and interact with it. Write down the habits you need to cultivate daily around the Word of God, such as “follow a reading plan,” or “memorize a Proverb a day.” Let the Holy Spirit guide your thinking on this.
