Luke 18:18-30
[18]
And a ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal
life?” [19] And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is
good except God alone. [20] You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit
adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor
your father and mother.’” [21] And he said, “All these I have kept from
my youth.” [22] When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you
still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you
will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” [23] But when he
heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich. [24]
Jesus, seeing that he had become sad, said, “How difficult it is for
those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! [25] For it is easier
for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to
enter the kingdom of God.” [26] Those who heard it said, “Then who can
be saved?” [27] But he said, “What is impossible with man is possible
with God.” [28] And Peter said, “See, we have left our homes and
followed you.” [29] And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there is
no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children,
for the sake of the kingdom of God, [30] who will not receive many times
more in this time, and in the age to come eternal life.”
2 Timothy 4
[1]
I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to
judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: [2]
preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke,
and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. [3] For the time is
coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching
ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own
passions, [4] and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander
off into myths. [5] As for you, always be sober-minded, endure
suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
[6]
For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of
my departure has come. [7] I have fought the good fight, I have finished
the race, I have kept the faith. [8] Henceforth there is laid up for me
the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will
award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have
loved his appearing.
[9]
Do your best to come to me soon. [10] For Demas, in love with this
present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has
gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia. [11] Luke alone is with me. Get Mark
and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me for ministry. [12]
Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus. [13] When you come, bring the cloak
that I left with Carpus at Troas, also the books, and above all the
parchments. [14] Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm; the Lord
will repay him according to his deeds. [15] Beware of him yourself, for
he strongly opposed our message. [16] At my first defense no one came to
stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them!
[17] But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me
the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear
it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. [18] The Lord will rescue me
from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To
him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
[19]
Greet Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus. [20] Erastus
remained at Corinth, and I left Trophimus, who was ill, at Miletus.
[21] Do your best to come before winter. Eubulus sends greetings to you,
as do Pudens and Linus and Claudia and all the brothers.
[22] The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you.
Proverbs 13:13-25
[13]
Whoever despises the word brings destruction on himself,
but he who reveres the commandment will be rewarded.
[14]
The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life,
that one may turn away from the snares of death.
[15]
Good sense wins favor,
but the way of the treacherous is their ruin.
[16]
Every prudent man acts with knowledge,
but a fool flaunts his folly.
[17]
A wicked messenger falls into trouble,
but a faithful envoy brings healing.
[18]
Poverty and disgrace come to him who ignores instruction,
but whoever heeds reproof is honored.
[19]
A desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul,
but to turn away from evil is an abomination to fools.
[20]
Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise,
but the companion of fools will suffer harm.
[21]
Disaster pursues sinners,
but the righteous are rewarded with good.
[22]
A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children,
but the sinner’s wealth is laid up for the righteous.
[23]
The fallow ground of the poor would yield much food,
but it is swept away through injustice.
[24]
Whoever spares the rod hates his son,
but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.
[25]
The righteous has enough to satisfy his appetite,
but the belly of the wicked suffers want.
Nehemiah 11
[1]
Now the leaders of the people lived in Jerusalem. And the rest of the
people cast lots to bring one out of ten to live in Jerusalem the holy
city, while nine out of ten remained in the other towns. [2] And the
people blessed all the men who willingly offered to live in Jerusalem.
[3]
These are the chiefs of the province who lived in Jerusalem; but in the
towns of Judah everyone lived on his property in their towns: Israel,
the priests, the Levites, the temple servants, and the descendants of
Solomon’s servants. [4] And in Jerusalem lived certain of the sons of
Judah and of the sons of Benjamin. Of the sons of Judah: Athaiah the son
of Uzziah, son of Zechariah, son of Amariah, son of Shephatiah, son of
Mahalalel, of the sons of Perez; [5] and Maaseiah the son of Baruch, son
of Col-hozeh, son of Hazaiah, son of Adaiah, son of Joiarib, son of
Zechariah, son of the Shilonite. [6] All the sons of Perez who lived in
Jerusalem were 468 valiant men.
[7]
And these are the sons of Benjamin: Sallu the son of Meshullam, son of
Joed, son of Pedaiah, son of Kolaiah, son of Maaseiah, son of Ithiel,
son of Jeshaiah, [8] and his brothers, men of valor, 928. [9] Joel the
son of Zichri was their overseer; and Judah the son of Hassenuah was
second over the city.
[10]
Of the priests: Jedaiah the son of Joiarib, Jachin, [11] Seraiah the
son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of
Ahitub, ruler of the house of God, [12] and their brothers who did the
work of the house, 822; and Adaiah the son of Jeroham, son of Pelaliah,
son of Amzi, son of Zechariah, son of Pashhur, son of Malchijah, [13]
and his brothers, heads of fathers’ houses, 242; and Amashsai, the son
of Azarel, son of Ahzai, son of Meshillemoth, son of Immer, [14] and
their brothers, mighty men of valor, 128; their overseer was Zabdiel the
son of Haggedolim.
[15]
And of the Levites: Shemaiah the son of Hasshub, son of Azrikam, son of
Hashabiah, son of Bunni; [16] and Shabbethai and Jozabad, of the chiefs
of the Levites, who were over the outside work of the house of God;
[17] and Mattaniah the son of Mica, son of Zabdi, son of Asaph, who was
the leader of the praise, who gave thanks, and Bakbukiah, the second
among his brothers; and Abda the son of Shammua, son of Galal, son of
Jeduthun. [18] All the Levites in the holy city were 284.
[19]
The gatekeepers, Akkub, Talmon and their brothers, who kept watch at
the gates, were 172. [20] And the rest of Israel, and of the priests and
the Levites, were in all the towns of Judah, every one in his
inheritance. [21] But the temple servants lived on Ophel; and Ziha and
Gishpa were over the temple servants.
[22]
The overseer of the Levites in Jerusalem was Uzzi the son of Bani, son
of Hashabiah, son of Mattaniah, son of Mica, of the sons of Asaph, the
singers, over the work of the house of God. [23] For there was a command
from the king concerning them, and a fixed provision for the singers,
as every day required. [24] And Pethahiah the son of Meshezabel, of the
sons of Zerah the son of Judah, was at the king’s side in all matters
concerning the people.
[25]
And as for the villages, with their fields, some of the people of Judah
lived in Kiriath-arba and its villages, and in Dibon and its villages,
and in Jekabzeel and its villages, [26] and in Jeshua and in Moladah and
Beth-pelet, [27] in Hazar-shual, in Beersheba and its villages, [28] in
Ziklag, in Meconah and its villages, [29] in En-rimmon, in Zorah, in
Jarmuth, [30] Zanoah, Adullam, and their villages, Lachish and its
fields, and Azekah and its villages. So they encamped from Beersheba to
the Valley of Hinnom. [31] The people of Benjamin also lived from Geba
onward, at Michmash, Aija, Bethel and its villages, [32] Anathoth, Nob,
Ananiah, [33] Hazor, Ramah, Gittaim, [34] Hadid, Zeboim, Neballat, [35]
Lod, and Ono, the valley of craftsmen. [36] And certain divisions of the
Levites in Judah were assigned to Benjamin.
