Keeping the Spiritual Stars

PRAY OVER THIS

“He who says, ‘I know Him,’ and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.” 1 John 2:4

PONDER THIS

The word keep was used by sailors in ancient times when they didn’t have GPS as we do. They would steer by the stars. At nighttime, a sailor would look up to the stars and he would steer by those stars. Sailors called that “keeping the stars.” That is, setting one’s course by the stars.

As Christians, we are to set our course in life by keeping the commandments. We treasure those commandments and steer by those commandments. That doesn’t mean that we could never get blown off course. But if we have no desire to live by the Word of God, if we can sin carelessly, flippantly, without any conviction, we are not living in the truth. This is what John meant by saying this person is a liar and the truth is not in him.

Why is it necessary for us to keep God’s commandments to give evidence that we know Him and love Him?

What is the difference between keeping the commandments because of God’s love and keeping the commandments to earn God’s love?

PRACTICE THIS

Take time today to journal ways your life gives evidence of your love for God as you keep His commandments. List also any areas in which you desire growth in keeping His commandments.
